Chevrolet Spark MPG Lower on US Market Version

The Chevrolet Spark is now available on the US market, for which it has been reengineered with mixed results.

With a base price of $12,995, the Spark is significantly cheaper than the Mini Cooper or the Fiat 500, and it is hoped that it will attract buyers who might otherwise have considered one of the other minicars.

The Spark appeared in various European, Asian, African, and South American markets last year,

It has proved trendy overseas, and GM has released a list of fun facts regarding how it has done in foreign markets:

§  It is the most popular of the nine Chevy models available in India.

§  In South Korea, the most popular Spark color is pink.

§  Chevy claims that it is a status symbol for the young and upwardly mobile in South America.

§  In Europe, the Spark has sold best in Italy, the 500's own domestic market.

§  On the African continent, the most popular colors for the Spark are red, cocktail green, and atomic blue.

§  Australian buyers could originally only buy the Spark in a stick shift.

§  Forty percent of all GM sales in Lebanon were the Chevy Spark.

In the US, the Spark has a manual transmission as standard, with automatic as an option.

Chevy says that the Spark has been reengineered for the American market to enhance safety and technology. It seems, however, that these changes have negatively impacted its fuel economy. The European version, which has a 1.0-liter engine, gets 46 miles per gallon, according to Road and Track.

As Autoblog reports, the American Spark, which has a 1.4-liter engine, has received an EPA rating of 32 miles per gallon in the city and 38 on the highway, for a combined mpg of 34. When the US version has an automatic transmission, the EPA gives it a rating of 28 city and 37 highway, or a combined mpg of 32.

Hopefully, price and cuteness will go far with US buyers.
