The 2017 Ford Fiesta ST, set to be unveiled in one of the auto shows scheduled early next year, is confirmed to have a powered up 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo Eco Boost engine that the company use on some of its model. This switch is mainly because of the engine downsizing and new rules in fuel efficiency.
Smaller But Better
We already know that a new generation of Ford Fiesta ST is on the works as it has been caught by spy photographers testing in camouflage a few times but little information is still known. Not anymore, as Darren Palmer, the European and global Vehicle Segment B director of Ford, confirmed in an interview the first official details about the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST. Apparently, the third generation will leave the 1.6 four-cylinder of its current version in favor of a powered-up version three-cylinder 1.0 Turbo Eco Boost engine. An engine, smaller than its predecessor, yet more promising.
Gone are the days where you could pretty much tell how powerful and fast a car was, just by the size of its engine. It was a surefire method back then that when your engine is 2.9, then it will clearly have a superior performance than a 1.5. With the latest technology, engine size is not what matters now.
A lot of car manufacturers, including Ford, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota and more, are already downsizing engine and finding better ways to extract more power from smaller amounts of fuel. Thus what will become with the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST.
"We are seeing more and more what we can do with the 1.0 liter engine in development and the results are promising. It's a fantastic engine. It sounds good and offers plenty of torque when the turbo kicks in, so we're looking at this for the next ST," said Palmer.
Working Hard For The New Fiesta ST
The next generation Ford Fiesta is one of the most sought out models from Ford. This is why the development team is heavily focus on the chassis tuning. With the addition of a mechanical well, the brand not only wants to increase the performance of the model but also want to achieve lower fuel consumption and emissions. Of course, they will not forget to create a chassis with a tune as fun as the current Fiesta ST, which will be accompanied by excellent touch of exterior and interior redesign.
"There's still a huge demand for the ST - we've seen that with the current ST200. But we want to offer more, so expect more performance and efficiency," said Palmer.
If all goes well, the new generation of Ford Fiesta ST will see a 12 percent power increase over the current model and can produce more than 200hp compare to the 140hp of its predecessor. We are excited for the new ST!
