The rush to launch electric cars, either in its Pure or hybrid form is well underway and Mercedes just dropped hints of what its offerings will be like in the segment.
The short video that the German luxury car manufacturer has come up with does not have much to reveal though from what seems evident, it is an SUV that is forthcoming at the moment, revealed Auto Express.
Further, it is likely to be a pure electric vehicle if the on/off symbol is any indication. The grille is another area where innovation is at its best and seems to me made entirely of LED lights. The grille is one aspect that Mercedes has really been improvising on off late and the F015 concept is a shining example of that.
The headlights and taillights meanwhile will also be LED-based. The concept also lacks well-defined side-view mirrors as we know them right now, with cameras serving the purpose instead.
The futuristic touch continues in the interiors as well with a strategic use of blue LED lighting, making things all the more alluring. There seems an expansive LED display that would serve as the infotainment system and so on.
Overall, the video is too short and seems to be aimed more at satiating our desire for more rather than revealing anything meaningful. Mercedes had earlier hinted its first EV would be based on the GLC crossover and would tentatively be named the ELC, Green Car Reports mentioned.
Further, even though details are scant at the moment though previous reports had hinted the ELC would have its battery pack accommodated along the bottom with an electric motor fitted on top of both or either of the front or rear axles. There has also been a hint of using lithium-sulfur battery instead of the usual lithium-ion combination. The range is expected to be around 500 kms or 310 miles with a projected power rating of around 400 kilowatts or 540 horsepower.
Fortunately, we won't have to wait for long to come across the real thing considering that the EV concept is set for launch during the upcoming Paris Motor Show itself. Mercedes has already hinted that it is planning an EV offensive in the near future with several models in the pipeline.
In such a context, the upcoming SUV concept will be interesting as it not only will reveal a fresh new take on EVs but will also showcase what direction Mercedes will follow will the rest of its EV lineup.
