Honda pushed for Sepang F1 engine updates to its McLaren vehicle even though such modification would warrant a penalty for the competing sports car. With seven initial upgrades shown during the Spa event this year, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button will garner a penalty for exceeding updates on the six-engine components of their vehicles.
The McLaren-Honda team's performance in F1 racing had been improving since their worst season in 2015 for 35 years in the race. Fernando Alonso's seventh rank during the Singapore Grand Prix signaled the potential of the team to win in the upcoming 2016 Formula 1 Season in Malaysia this year, according to Bleacher Report.
During an interview, Yusuke Hasegawa, the Japanese Managing Officer and Director for Honda revealed that the Sepang F1 engine for the McLaren candidates for 2016 Formula 1 Season in Malaysia. Drivers Alonso and Jenson Button had already exceeded their allocation for each of their six-engine vehicle components that the upgrade would cost them penalties on the event.
Hasegawa revealed that since they wish to defer from incurring penalties in the Japan event, they are willing to risk penalties in the 2016 Formula 1 Season in Malaysia, reported Auto Sport. In fact, they have already introduced a brand new engine for the drivers during the Spa event that they felt it was necessary to introduce another engine to the race.
Although Hasegawa has already revealed that they are willing to risk the penalty incursion, they have not finalized the call yet. He revealed that the team is still discussing the best strategy to use if they would update the Sepang F1 engine for McLaren competitors.
The said Sepang F1 engine update was deemed necessary by Hasegawa as he thought the cars were far behind from race tactics based upon a constructor's point of view. Given that, he also manifested that it would be better for the team to split the tactics of the cars to make it to the top in Malaysia.
