A man suspected of planting the bomb which injured 29 people in New York City has been held in custody. The Afghan-born American, who was identified as Ahmad Khan Rahami, is currently undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds that he suffered in a shootout with police in New Jersey.

Rahami is also suspected of planting other bombs in New Jersey according to ABC. After identifying the suspect, the authorities immediately sent out text messages to mobile phone users about the 28-year-old's description and warnings that he is armed and dangerous.

Linden police received a complaint of a man sleeping in the doorway of Merdie's Tavern in Linden, New Jersey. A police officer went to investigate and woke the sleeping Rahami.

When the officer interrogated him, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired at the officer, hitting his abdomen. Fortunately, the said police officer was wearing a bulletproof vest ABC reports.

Another officer was injured with a glass that hit his forehead when Rahami fired on his police car. The shootout finally ended when the police wounded Rahami in the arm and leg.

The suspect was charged with five counts of attempted murder after the shootout with police officers. The charges on the New York City bombing are still being determined by Federal prosecutors.

Rahami has no known criminal record, but his family has been known to police for late-night noise and subject to crowd complaints at a restaurant. As of now the suspect's motives remain unknown.

"Yesterday there was no hint of any connection foreign terrorism ... but there may very well turn out to be a link to foreign terrorist organisations, and that we'll find out today or in the coming days," Andrew Cuomo, New York Governor said in an interview.
