Porsche 918 Spyder to Be Available With Racing Package

Buyers interested in heightening the Porsche-driving experience will have the option of buying the 918 Spyder in a racetrack edition.

The Spyder, which the world has only seen as a concept, is going into production in September 2013.

According to Autocar, for a premium, the car can be had without paint and without many of the interiors, an option for which approximately 20 percent of buyers are expected to opt. The company will produce 918 cars, and Porsche expects to have 90 percent of them sold by the time the car is ready for delivery.

The missing paint and features will render the car lighter and more appropriate for racing.

Of course, the prototype of the regular 918 goes from O to 62 mph in just under 3.2 seconds, and has a top speed of198 mph and a lap time on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring of less than 7 minutes 30 seconds.

It is powered by a V8 combustion engine developing more than 500 bhp and running at maximum speed engine of 9,200 rpm, as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 bhp (160 kW).

Porsche says that skillful use of magnesium and aluminum has already reduced the weight to 3,285 lb.

And that's with paint, presumably.
