Consumer Reports Cars 2012: Toyota, Honda Top Best Used Cars List

A study published by Consumer Reports earlier this year found that pre-owned automobiles up to three-years-old are more dependable.

"Even the least reliable car makers are gaining ground on the perennial reliability leaders," said CR researchers.

Leaders among the list are Honda and Toyota, whose models have a purported 80 percent or better chance of being completely reliable. In all the categories, Toyota or Hondas product of some kind is right in the thick of things for best reliability, resale and so on. Other automakers such as Subaru, Nissan and Mazda weren't far behind on the list. In comparison, Volkswagen products are just over 70 percent reliable.

"Three-year-old used cars fare better in terms of dependability than their processors. For example, Volkswagen models manufactured between 2002 and 2005 are a mere 58 percent reliable, the Toyota-Honda due scored 82 percent. Interestingly, the manufacturer that has made the 'most dramatic improvement' over the past decade is a Volvo," said Consumer Reports researchers to straight.com.

Here's the list of Best of the Best for sedans and Sports utility Vehicles chosen by Consumer Reports:

1. Less than $10,000 Category

Hyundai Sonata four-cylinder and ScionxB wagon tops the list. "The Sonata's standard safety gear makes this car a bargain," notes a CR researcher.

2.  Less than $10,000 to $15,000 Category

In this category, Infiniti G35 and Toyota Highlander top the list. On the G35, CR researchers said: "The ride is well-controlled and the cabin is quiet."

3. Less than $15,000 to $20,000 Category

Acura TL and Toyota RAV4. "The TL offers a near-ideal blend of comfort, convenience, and sportiness," said a CR researcher.

4. Less than $20,000 to $25,000 category

Infiniti M35 and Acura MDX. "AWD is part of the package with both of these, as is a high level of standard safety equipment. Both of these upscale contenders also rank high in terms of comfort," said a CR researcher.
