Porsche isn't likely to go all out to adopt electric propulsion technology for its entire future vehicle range citing weight disadvantage that EVs suffer from, Automobile Magazine reported.
That seems to be more applicable to sports cars, even though those too will fall in line in due course of time.
"For the simple reason that electrification still carries a substantial weight penalty, sports cars will hold on to classic propulsion solutions a little longer than other vehicle types," the new Porsche CEO, Oliver Blume said. "But even the 911 must eventually adjust," he added.
Porsche is already reported to be working on its Mission E electric sedan project which is slated for launch toward end-2020. However, the very fact that the company's new 960 supercar that was to be powered by a new mid-mounted flat-eight engine has since been sidelined in favor of the Mission E is proof enough of how serious Porsche is with its EV approach.
The Mission E is believed to be in its testing phase right now though the company has never really discussed much of it in public. Blume,however, did mention the Mission E platform codenamed J1 is scalable. That way, Porsche will have the twin option of lengthening it further to underpin luxurious cars that can rival the Bentley Mulsanne.
The other way round, shortening the platform will allow Porsche to introduce EVs with a mass market appeal. That includes cars such as the iNext from BMW or the Mercedes EQE, a three box electric vehicle that slots between the C- and E-Class, Automobile Magazine report further speculated.
A new smaller SUV is also likely in the works, one that would sit below the Cayenne and the Macan. The said SUV would be targeted for use in cities and will have sporty attributes.
However, what is also evident is that the car maker will continue with its conventional engine approach with sports cars such as the 911. Or the best it can go for is hybrid car technology to meet the stringent emissions norms of tomorrow.
