Ford is adding up to the car companies that will launch a self-driving car. The automaker plans to unveil the model by 2021 but some lucky individuals were able to test the much-awaited variant.

BBC reported on Sept. 13 that Ford held a demonstration of the autonomous vehicle. So far, the details about the upcoming model are still scarce.

On the other hand, The Verge staff was able to take a peek at the vehicle and even went on to have a test drive. Writer Tamara Warren took the opportunity to experience the feel of the autonomous car by hopping into the back seat of a self-driving Ford Fusion at the company's Product Development Center in Dearborn, Michigan recently.

According to the staff, riding in the model is very way different than learning how to drive. Unlike the perks of being a student driver, trusting a machine to drive is another thing.

The car was able to determine pedestrians and other cars. Its sensors worked amazingly and properly. The writer then realized that this type of vehicle will invade the streets in the near future.

Ford has the aim to be seen as a mobility company. And for that, producing their own line of self-driving cars is the first and essential step.

"We have been system integrating for a long time, hardware, software, and technology," Ford CEO Mark Fields said.

"That's why we're so excited about the development and how quickly the development is going forward and that's why we're aiming to have the vehicle on the market by 2021."

But how is the public going to accept the popularity of Ford's autonomous car? The CEO provided a brief but meaningful answer.

"When you stand back and you think about the societal, the safety, the environmental and the economic benefits, I think people are going to warm to it very quickly," Fields stated.
