Bentley Continues Peddling SUV Concept

Having brought the concept model of its Exp 9 F to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, England a week ago, Bentley has released more images and a rolling video of the SUV.

Goodwood represented the second time Bentley has made the Exp 9 F available for public viewing, the first being the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

The EXP 9 F concept is based around the Bentley 6.0 litre, twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine, with an 8-speed close-ratio transmission. Bentley says it is considering other engine possibilities, including a V6 plug-in hybrid. Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer says on the company's website that "any Bentley SUV would offer the thunderous performance for which the marquee is renowned."

It is clear that Bentley does not intend to sacrifice speed or performance if it enters the SUV market.

The F in "Exp 9 F" stands for "falcon", the bird whose characteristics the company says have guided the design phase. "Falcons are the fastest moving creatures on earth, recorded at speeds of over 300kh/h," the company says. "Powerful, refined and agile a falcon in the epitome of high performance."

Bentley calls a Bentley SUV "a natural progression" from the company's experience in constructing the all-wheel drive Continental range.

Autocar has reported that Bentley officials last week made their case to their Volkswagen parent company for making the Exp 9 F a production reality. Volkswagen executives are reportedly receptive to the idea, but are said to want changes in the concept's rear and front styling. The concept's interior, Autocar reports, has been very favorably received and would require little redevelopment.
