Mercedes-Benz found a solution for the worsening condition of parking spaces in crowded areas. The latest report revealed that the automaker might turn some of their cars into parking space finders.

The idea lies in a system wherein the cars would give each other a heads up every time it needs a parking space. Those models who are not likely to park but have seen a space when passing by on a parking area would inform other vehicles by a unified software.

According to Bloomberg, Mercedes-Benz and parts supplier, Robert Bosch GmbH are now working on a pilot project in Stuttgart, Germany, as stated in a statement on Friday. The might adapt BMW's system called ParkNow.

So how would it work? BMW's ParkNow service allows drivers to pre-book in parking garages as well as pay for roadside spots via an app. Meanwhile, Siemens AG created a system in 2015, using radar mounted on street lamps to provide information about free space and open locations.

As per the outlet, the company has been seeking ways to reduce traffic congestion especially in the cities wherein most of the people own cars. Of course, the more cars having to spend more time finding a free space means more pollution, hence the optimistic solution.

Mercedes-Benz' mother company Daimler AG started the idea. Aside from helping to reduce traffic congestion and pollution, the project aims to save more time for the drivers.

Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said at a conference in Berlin that they will start to develop an application for park finders. First, they need to distinguish the whereabout of parking areas.

Then, they will create a system that will be able to identify the exact location of the free parking space to upload to the car devices and/or sensors. The details about it shall be posted soon.

Sajjad Kahn, Mercedes' head of digital vehicle and mobility said that almost all of the Mercedes-Benz cars are connected. "If a car then also has the right sensors, it's logical to try and use the data generated while driving past to help speed up the search for a parking spot," he explained.
