Volkswagen has been the center of negative media attention after being involved in the diesel emission cheating scandal. As a result, some of the company's TDI models might be ceased for good.
According to Car and Driver, the new chief for North America stated that they would no longer push the campaign for an "environment-friendly" diesel powertrains. This may not be surprising for some.
It appears that Volkswagen will now shift its focus on producing electric cars instead. The demand for the electric vehicle is becoming since in the new dawn of technology.
President and CEO of North America Hinrich J. Woebcken told the website about the big change. Some of the models with TDI tags that might longer exist in the near future are 2016 models of the Golf, Jetta, and Passat.
"We don't foresee that the strength of diesel will come back for this market," he said. However, he made it clear that diesel may still play a part on some of their business.
"We will still offer diesel in specific products and packages where it seems appropriate, but we are looking to a future of electric mobility," the CEO added.
So far Woebcken also stated that Volkswagen needs to address the diesel emission scandal first before anything. For those who can recall, it has been reported that the company may face criminal charges due to the scandal.
According to another Car and Driver article, The Environmental Protection Agency found out that Volkswagen has installed a software to cheat. As a result, the Wall Street Journal reported that Volkswagen violated a law and might face criminal charges for "wrongdoings" after an extensive investigation.
Sources revealed that Volkswagen has been planning to set a meeting before the end of the year, wherein they can negotiate to lessen the damages. On the other hand, there is another report that they need to have at least $15 billion to buy the affected car back from the customers.
