GM Launches Sail Hatchback And Sedan In September 2012

General Motors officially announced the launch of its latest hatchback, Sail, which will be introduced to the Indian market by September 2012.

The luxury hatchback, which was showcased at the Auto Expo in India at the beginning of the year, will be a replacement of the Aveo U-VA in the Indian car market. The Sail will be the first of three cars, which are scheduled to launch in India under a partnership between General Motors and Shanghai Automotive industries Corporations (SAIC).

"We will launch the Sail in both hatchback and sedan versions in the next few months. This will replace the Aveo U-VA hatchback and Aveo sedan," said Lowell C Paddock, President and Managing Director of General Motors at a press conference in Delhi.

The Sail comes with latest General Motors diesel technology and will also be exported to other global auto markets. Both the hatchback and sedan version of the Sail will hold around 70 to 80 percent localized components. It is also being speculated that the company has plans to introduce the petrol version some time in the next year.

GM also announced its plans to introduce a newer face-lifted version of the Chevrolet Spark and MPV Enjoy by the end of the year. The company already introduced its latest versions of its premium sedan model, Chevrolet Cruze, with a re-worked engine and an all-new top-end variant of its premium SUV, Captiva.

Assessing on its aggressive approach of introducing top variants to market, it seems that GM is likely to increase the volumes in the Indian auto market.
