Audi has unveiled the 2017 A3 e-tron Plug-In Hybrid that comes with a host of improvements for both its interior and exterior. All of it makes the new A3 e-tron a smart little 'Sportback' - as Audi refers it to as - though unfortunately, prices have gone up too.

Coming to the exterior changes first, the A3 e-tron sports a front end that is more reminiscent of the A3 sedan. That apart, LED running lights, panoramic sunroofs, and backup camera are a standard on all three trim levels. That is not all as the new line-up also features the Pre Sense front-collision warning system as standard fitment on all the models. As CarandDriver reported, the system is designed to detect cars or obstacles in front and can even brake on its own if the driver isn't paying attention.

Moving over the interiors, there is the new Virtual Cockpit layout that catches the attention right away and replaces the array of gauges behind the steering. The system has also been made compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, besides offering navigation, 4G LTE and wireless hotspot connectivity as well, Cnet reported.

However, there are no changes under the hood with the same 1.4-liter turbocharged engine mated to an electric motor providing the thrust. Overall, its 204 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque that is at disposal of the driver.

While EPA is yet to come put with the efficiency figures for the 2017 A3 e-tron, the same setup in the 2016 model year A3 e-tron provided for a combined rating of 83 MPGe. While the figure isn't anything to be excited about, the fact that the onboard 8.8-kWh battery provides for just 16 miles of pure electric range is all the more depressing.

Coming over to the price, the base Premium starts at $39,850 which marks an increase of around $1000 over the last year's model. The same is also available in Premium Plus Prestige trims that is priced $42,950 and $48,500 respectively.
