Tom Cruise's Third Marriage Facing Failure, Katie Homes Files Divorce

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are appearing to end their five years of married life, as Holmes filed for divorce on Thursday citing "irreconcilable differences". Holmes also asked for sole custody of Suri, the couple's six-year-old daughter.

The announcement came when Cruise is still in Iceland, filming a movie. The "Top Gun" and "Mission: Impossible" actor is "deeply saddened" by Holmes' move, according to Cruise's spokeswoman.

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out," said the spokeswoman.

Cruise has married and divorced twice before marrying Holmes. After ending a 3-year-marriage with Mimi Rogers in 1990, Cruise married Nicole Kidman later that year. Cruise and Kidman separated in 2001, and the actor started dating Katie Holmes in 2005 and married in 2006. For Holmes, it was her first marriage.

During Cruise's marriage with Kidman, they adopted two children, Isabella, 19, and Connor, 17. Suri, 6, was born between Cruise and Holmes and attended her parents weeding when she was seven months old on November 18, 2006.

"[The divorce] is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest," said Holmes's lawyer Jonathan Wolfe on Friday.
