The Colorado Springs fire has already forced about 35,000 evacuees and destroyed 346 homes. Late Thursday night, a charred body was found in a consumed house and two other persons from the same house were reported missing.
This most destructive wildfire in US history has consumed almost 29 square miles, even threatening the US Air Force Academy. U.S. Present Barack Obama toured the area Friday.
"I really appreciate the president coming here ... if nothing more than just to reassure us that this has a focus at a national level, that there are people all over this country who are concerned for our citizens and those who have lost their homes,” said Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach.
High wind and drought provided for the fire since last weekend, while firefighters finally felt they were winning this battle Thursday when the winds had calmed to 10 miles per hour. Before, the wind was at 65 miles per hour before. The temperatures also cooled down from over 100 the 90s.
It could take another month when the season change coming before the fire could be fully under control, according an incident commander Rocky Opliger's comment to the Washington Post. As of last night, 15 percent of the fire was contained, according to the Incident Information System data.
