Mobius Motors is all set to address the issue of mobility and development in Africa with a car that will cost only $6,000. It can transport eight people and navigate the difficult terrain on the continent.
Joel Jackson, CEO of Mobius Motors, estimates that more than 320 million people in Africa have been cut off from basic facilities. And he cites that it could be due to proper transportation neither to their homes nor to their working environment.
"To accomplish that, we need to rethink what a car can be in the emerging market context," Jackson said. "With a focus on features like suspension, handling and ground clearance and de-emphasis on the expensive frills found in typical American, Japanese or European cars. And we hope to bring affordable vehicles to Africa's middle class.
Jackson also promises that the automaker has concrete plans to expand its $15 billion market across the continent to more than $500 billion annually.
"The Mobius Motors' car is being designed to be able to resist the heavy loads and transport the weight of more than eight persons," he said. "It could become a platform for small businesses to emerge in areas like transport, deliveries and medicine. It creates a platform for mobility, a reference to both the car's ability to physically move people but also advance their socio-economic standing."
Jackson officially announced that the car will go on sale at the end of this year and Kenya will be the first nation to witness the launch.
