Fernando Alonso Holds Victory At European Grand Prix

Formula One champion Fernando Alonso brought extra excitement to his hometown fans by winning the European F1 Grand Prix at the Valencia street circuit on Sunday.

Alonso took the overall championship lead and becomes Formula One's first repeat winner of the season. Sunday's win was his 29th of his career. Joining him on the podium was former Ferrari Champions driver, Kimi Raikkonen, who finished in second position for Lotus. Veteran Michael Schumacher took third for Mercedes.

"It's maybe the best victory I have had in terms of emotions," Alonso told the media after the race. "Here now, with the European championship of football on, and all the fans, I am feeling very proud to be Spanish at the moment."

The victory at the European Grand Prix lifted Fernando Alonso to the top of the standings with 111 points, 20 clear of Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber.

It was a bad day for Lewis Hamilton, who after fighting to defend the third spot, was knocked out of the race by teammate Pastor Maldonado.

Seven-time world champion Schumacher made his way through without an error to grab and hold on to the third position. At the age of 43, Schumacher becomes the oldest driver to stand on the Formula One podium since Australian Jack Brabham finished second at Brands Hatch at the age of 44 in 1970.
