Leading the pack by 13 laps in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 vehicle, four-time NASCAR Cup champion, Jeff Gordon, reached a milestone of 23,000 career laps during Sunday's race at Sonoma.
According to reports, its the most career laps by any current Sprint Cup driver and seventh of all time.
"We went about a half-lap too far. Luckily, we had enough laps to slowly work our way up into the top 10," Gordon told reporters after the race at Sonoma on Sunday. "Had we not run out of fuel. We would have stayed up toward the front and battled those guys at the end. We had a really good car."
Gordon stayed in contention until Lap 72, when he ran out of fuel and slowly crawled to pit row. That dropped him from third to 15th. He finished sixth. Gordon made his Sprint Cup debut in the 1992 season finale, but he'd been racing long before that.
The last time the 40-year-old speedster led a lap in Sonoma was in 2006, the last victory on the California native's home track.
