BMW M5 & M6 Recalled Over Rollaway Risk, Driveshaft Failures & More

BMW is recalling 965 BMW M5 sedans and BMW M6 Coupes for a powertrain problem and driveshaft failures, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall will also reportedly include 2015 M6 Convertible and 2015 M6 Gran Coupe sedan, reported Edmunds. In addition, certain models, which has been manufactured in 2014 has also been recalled  for the same issues.

"The affected vehicles have a driveshaft that may have been inadequately welded during manufacturing," the NHTSA said in its recall summary. "Due to the improper weld, the driveshaft may fracture and fail, causing loss of drive to the rear wheels and a loss of propulsion.

All of the models, which has been recalled, share the same engine, i.e. a 4.4 liter twin - turbo V8 rated at 560 horsepower, but available in four different body styles.

According to the notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Administration, the driveshaft "may have been inadequately welded during manufacturing." Thus, a fracture, which might result in an accident can cause imminent loss of lives.

Replacing a driveshaft is not a quick fix, but that is what will be required to fix the vehicles in question, reported Car Scoops.

Owners of the affected vehicles should expect to hear from the manufacturer to arrange service at their local dealership starting September 6.

Meanwhile, in other news, BMW has brought back a retro version of 2002 and named it "Turbomeister". It was debuted on the 2002 Hommage at Pebble's Beach Concours d' Elegance, with the new nickname. It looks like a modern BMW 2002, and is orange in color.

However, the technical specifications of the BMW retro edition is yet to be published, but considering BMW's reputation, it will be of similar nature as of its predecessors.

Thus, despite the driveshaft failure and recalls, it seems that BMW will live up to the expectation of the users and its huge fan base.
