BMW Sponsors Rio 20 Summit To Show Concern For Green Tech

German automaker, BMW, took a bolder, greener step towards environmental sustainability when it became the official sponsor of the United Nations Rio 20 World Environmental Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

As part of its sponsorship of the world summit, BMV showcased its main sustainable management milestones in its exclusively built BMW Group Sustainability Lounge, a 400-square-meter pavilion. The exclusive lounge was located on the official conference premises and was built with lightweight white nylon. The lounge was built in such a way that it supported itself with air pressure and nylon fabric, which allowed for optimal utilization of daylight.

The Rio 20 world summit attracted a large crowd over the last month with an estimated 50,000 people from different parts of the world in attendance for the event. It has also been estimated that more than 3,000 Rio 20-related events took place around the city and the venue turned out to be the official venue for U.N. negotiations on issues concerning the environment.

"The European Debt crisis, U.S. joblessness and even the Chinese economic slowdown has sapped some people enthusiasm," said Timothy Wirth, president of the United Nations Foundation.

"Building a global consensus on sustainability is becoming increasingly difficult as a result of economic crises and a U.S. political climate that is increasingly hostile to action on climate change," said Gro Harlem Brundtland, one of the chief architects of the first Rio Earth Summit which held in 1992.

The event has been attended by heads of state and ministers, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Francois Hollande and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
