Tata technology has partnered with France Dassault Systems to develop an electric car with a price tag of $20,000.
Tata Technologies has completed the first feasibility study on the project using Dassault System's 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Further information has not been revealed on when the vehicle will hit the roads. The company declines to comment on it. France's Dassault Systems is one of the world's leading 3D design software and product solutions firm for the electric car project.
"Though the exorbitant duty structure keep the hybrid car Prius' price high, environmentally conscious customers still show interest," Shekhar Viswanathan, Duty Managing Director for Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said in an interview with Financial Chronicle. "Unless these cars are made in India, the duty structure will make it unaffordable. Clearly the government has to encourage hybrid or electric vehicles or any green vehicle through a cut in import duties and incentivising local production. The government has already done some fair amount of encouraging measures such as budget announcements on spare parts for EVs, duty reduction and others."
"The Tata Technology has been working with Dassault Systems to leverage its expertise in meeting the numerous design and cost constraints, as well as create the targeted user experience, including a final vehicle price tag of under 420,000," said Kevin Fisher, president (vehicle programs and development group) for Tata Technologies.
Tata Motors, the passenger car division of the Tata conglomerate, had developed an electric version of the India Vista model in 2010 which was supposed to be made commercially available in the U.K., Norway and Denmark by 2011. Even though the model won several awards and accolades in the media fraternity, the Indian carmaker doesn't seem to be interested in distributing as initially planned.
