Tesla Motors is set to open its largest store so far in San Francisco Bay area this Friday in an effort to continually expand its consumer network. The 65,000-square feet boutique is reported to sell cars, educate people about electric cars, and provide maintenance services.
According to Fortune, the Bay area store is located at the corner of Van Ness Avenue and O'Farrell Street. New sites are expected to open in new locations every four days as part of Tesla's initiative called SolarCity.
From the outside, spectators will be able to see a full glimpse of Tesla cars was the store is made of floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a massive TV screen featuring the company's latest products. Last Tuesday, a VIP launching was held where hundreds of Tesla customers and enthusiasts gathered. Tesla is planning to host future launches on the store due to its large size and strategic location.
Currently, only the Model S and Model X are sold out of the store, although the advanced Model 3 will soon be available once SolarCity finally materialized. About 400,000 reservations for Model 3 cars were made which is going to be sold for $35,000 apiece by the end of 2017.
Tesla could also be selling solar panels and home batteries in all of its stores eventually, reported San Francisco Chronicle.
"It literally took us years to find this place," said Jon McNeill, president of global sales and service. "Because the Bay Area is our home, we really wanted to plant the flag in San Francisco."
The three-storey showroom was built in 1937 under Chevrolet's supervision and it was previously occupied by other car companies. The store is just a freeway drive away from Tesla's headquarters in Palo Alto and the manufacturing factory in Fremont, California.
Tesla projected to spend approximately $1.1 billion in store expansion, taking about one-third of the company's cash-on-hand. The company's goal is to build 300 stores this year and 441 stores by the end of next year.
