Jaguar Land Rover states in a press conference that its newly developed autonomous driving technology will make way for the next-generation units to drive themselves on any kind of terrain.

The research project focuses on making the self-driving vehicle to drive over any kind of terrain and environment. It is called the Autonomous All-Terrain Driving. A new sensor technology is used here. Jaguar Land Rover claims that is functions better than a human driver.

This matches the high level artificial intelligence of the vehicle, enabling the car to think on its own on any terrain that it is in. Tony Harper, the head of research at JLR said that, "We don't want to limit future highly automated and fully autonomous technologies to tarmac."

They want to make it capable to drive on its own even if it is off the road. This allows the vehicle to be versatile and "ever ready".

Surface Identification and 3D Path Sensing are two of the features that Jaguar and Land Rover self-driving units will have. The 360-degree view is the most interesting feature of them all, according to some auto experts and car enthusiasts.

Cameras, ultrasonic, radar and LIDAR is also present in the self driving technology. These enable the vehicle to know the surface characteristics of the road ahead.

This is important to ensure that the route taken is right. Tarmac and gravel can also be sensed by this technology, making it really a versatile one.

With the help of the Terrain-Based Speed Adaptation, it is able to sense potholes and standing water. It adjusts the vehicle's speed automatically when things appear.

Overhanging branches and barriers are also sensed with JLR's new technology. This is made possible with the Overhead Clearance Assist.

If there are things on the roof, it can be adjusted, making it safe for the things on top and the passengers inside the vehicle.
