Joey Logano beats Mark Martin in NASCAR event

Joey Logano won the Pocano 400. It was apparent of his cheer as he stood on top of the No. 20 car, high-fiving everyone he could reach in victory lane. Beverages were sprayed, fists were pumped and throaty shouts of celebration could be heard well down the 2 ½-mile track according to an article in The Associated Press,.  It is what winning a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is all about.

Neither rain nor 53-year-old Mark Martin would deny Logano. Logano, 22, gave Martin a well-timed nudge out of the way in the closing laps of the Pocono 400 Sunday at Pocono Raceway to get his first victory since 2009. He is the first driver in 31 Cup events to win from the pole.

Logano, a much-hyped phenom when he broke in with Joe Gibbs Racing, has two victories in 125 Cup starts. The driver's wish for critics: "I hope it shuts them all up."

In 2005, Martin predicted Logano "can be one of the greatest that ever raced in NASCAR." Of Logano's winning move, runner-up Martin said, "I'd call that a bump and run. It has been acceptable in this racing for a long time. It's not how I would have done it. Certainly, had I had a fast-enough car, he would have gotten a return (bump)."

Greg Biffle of Vancouver, Wash., started having engine problems on the 111th of 160 laps, finished 24th and dropped from first to third in the series standings.

Matt Kenseth, who finished seventh, leads the standings by 10 points over Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was eighth.  Biffle is 16 points behind Kenseth.

Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw placed 29th of 43; he hit a wall and completed 139 laps.   There were 22 pit-road speeding penalties, a record for a Sprint Cup event.
