Whiplash injuries may be minor in nature, however the little accidental pressure to one's back (the cervical spine, in particular) could become a major pain later. Aside from the advancements in driver-assisted technologies, a group of British researchers may have already come up with a unique solution to avoid such injuries.
The innovative and new car seating system is being developed by Loughborough University researchers designed to lessen the effect caused whiplash injury resulting from near collision or car accidents, according to Engineering and Technology magazine. Collectively an active system which consists of a reactive seat and head restraint, the invention is expected to react at the same time during an impact, thus giving immediate head support.
Project leader Memis Acar said that the car seating system does its job by allowing the head restraint to come closer to the head prior to whiplash as well as reducing the unwarranted movement between the torso and head. Acar is also a Mechanics professor at the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical, and Manufacturing Engineering. Acar further stated that the group's invention is one-of-a-kind in the auto market and that it is a cost-effective product which could be fitted for any car type, as per the news source.
According to the Loughborough University website, the simulations served as a means to determine linkage analysis when the head restraint and car seat act simultaneously and were handled by Rickie Bewsher as an individual project. Bewsher is a student currently working on his Mechanical Engineering degree.
The simulation's results were taken from a crash test dummy placed in a driving position. The outcome showed that the added feature of a reactive car seat and head restraint combination was found to be more than effective in minimizing the likelihood of whiplash happening in an accident, according to the publication.
