Subaru Builds Hardcore WRX STI; POV Rally Champion Mark Higgins Set To Conquer Isle Of Man Record

British rally champion Mark Higgins will once again drive Subaru's WRX STI in another attempt this year to beat his own Isle of Man lap record in 2014. STI, the company's in-house performance division, has teamed up with British tech firm Prodrive to create the ultimate one-of-a-kind car to conquer the current lap time of 19 mins, 15 secs.

While details have yet to be released by both Subaru and Prodrive on the new car, images have surfaced online on what the rally car looks like. Possible suspension upgrades and impressive aerodynamics, plus road tires and a stripped down interior, the upcoming Subaru WRX STI can well enough do the job, according to AutoCar UK.

Speculations have also been going around on the car's engine modifications, like getting an open-air exhaust. It is also possible that Prodrive may have fine-tuned the WRX STI's chassis settings, a more dynamic spring and damper system, as well as a secure rear wing to allow more space movement on the track, as per the news agency.

Prodrive has been in partnership with Subaru in delivering highly popular rally cars since 1989 until 2008, when the Japanese car maker opted out of the WRC, according to Yahoo.

The WRX STI's cabin has been seen removed at its rear seating, door panels, and even the carpet to make way for a lighter feel. To add, a new pair of bucket seats, a full cruise cage, and a new hood equipped with vents that regulate engine bay temperature, were put in front, according to the publication.

The Isle of Man TT is an annual event held between May 28 and June 10, on a 37-mile race course with on-off track events, according to IOMTT Breaks. The first week of the festival,  which is a practice or qualifying week, showcases daily events starting 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM. The second week, or aptly named Race week, takes place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday where pro-circuit racers take on the adrenaline rush.
