Toyota Aims For Six Compact Cars In India

Two of the world's largest automakers have squared off for the top spot in the Indian auto market.

Toyota and Suzuki are each set to release its latest designs over the next few months - putthing the two automakers in a high-stakes competition in a very large market.

Suzuki is already considered No. 1 in the Indian small segment section, while Japanese giant, Toyota, has plans to launch a fleet of its own small segment cars. According to industry sources, Toyota is developing six subcompact cars in an effort to boost production and extend its reach into emerging markets such as India, Brazil and China.

With high hopes and confidence to reach those new heights, Toyota is focussing more on entry-level market in India, which is a new road for the automaker.

"Globally, we have outlined a strategy to launch eight subcompacts in emerging markets by 2015," Managing Director Toyota Kirloskar, Hiroshi Nakagawa, told reporters.  "Two cars on the Etios platform have already been introduced. India is an important market. We will launch more small cars in the country."

Toyota has a joint venture with Kirloskar Motors, which is an Indian-based automative company, in marketing and sales.

In an official statement, Toyota said the company will start introducing six more compact cars in the months to come after thoroughly assessing the market potentialities in India. Going with the opinion of the auto experts, Toyota is aiming for developing countries where the market potential is high, as opposed to developed countries where the sales of vehicles is still stagnant.
