A favorable month would seem to be fitting for Google's most recent report on its self-driving cars by Google/Alphabet this March. Revealing its up-to-date mapping system and the most minimal accident occurring for the high-tech self-driving cars by Google showed just how successful it is since it was launched in 2009.

The self-driving project by Google as per 9to5 Google revealed that this month, only a single accident occurred to one of its Lexus vehicles in Austin Texas. According to the publication, the accident was not even the fault of the self-driving vehicle but was involved because of another vehicle driven by an actual human being.

Furthermore, the actual report which can be found in Google's press release revealed that there are already 21 Lexus RX450h SUVs driving on public streets as well as in California and Texas, 13 and 8 respectively.

Meanwhile, prototypes are also driving on public streets according to the release, all 33 of them and 24, 7, and 2 for Mountain View, Texas, and Kirkland, respectively. But one of the most interesting features of the self-driving cars include its 3D mapping system which ensures accuracy and therefore safety of the vehicles for its surroundings.

"We build a detailed picture of what's around us using the sensors on our self-driving car. As we drive around town, our lasers send out pulses of light that help us paint a three-dimensional portrait of the world," the release reads.

Furthermore, one of the most high-tech detailed mapping system is just brilliant because it "helps our car know exactly where it is in the world. As our cars drive autonomously on the road, our software matches what the car sees in real-time with the maps we've already built, allowing the car to know its position on the road to within 10cm of accuracy," the release continued.
