Jeep fans who have been waiting for a Wrangler pickup truck will finally get their wish ... next year.

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and Jeep CEO Mike Manley announced Monday at the Detroit auto show that the vehicle will enter production in late 2017, according to Car and Driver. While the production pickup won't be the first for Jeep, it will be the first made under the Wrangler brand.

While fans have wanted Jeep to debut a Wrangler-based pickup for a while, the automaker has spent the past couple of decades teasing concepts like the Gladiator and the J-12 without starting production on either of them, Road & Truck noted.

Marchionne said Monday at the Detroit auto show that Fiat Chrysler will build the pickup at its factory in Toledo, Ohio, the same location where the next-generation Wrangler will be produced, The Detroit News reported.

"Sergio and I work very, very closely on the Jeep product portfolio, and both of us have been a fan of a potential Wrangler pickup," Manley said. "For me, there is a historical place in our lineup for it."

Fiat Chrysler is expected to reveal more details about the pickup and its new five-year plan through 2018 during its 2016 earnings call later this month.
