Volkswagen is giving $1,000 in gift cards and vouchers in a gesture of goodwill to owners of diesel-powered cars involved in the company's emissions-cheating scandal, according to the Associated Press.

The German automaker announced the offers Monday after 482,000 angry VW car owners in the U.S. complained about paying extra for their vehicles to be purportedly environmentally sensitive, reported Fox News.

The $1,000 offer will be divided into two $500 cards, noted USA Today. The first $500 Visa debit card can be spent at the cardholder's discretion, and the second $500 dealership credit will go to VW owners in possession of a vehicle affected by the emissions scandal.

In addition to the vouchers and gift cards, VW is offering three years of free roadside assistance to assuage upset diesel car owners. Individuals accepting the offer will not have to relinquish their right to participate in a class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen.

"There are no stipulations," said VW spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan.

"We are working tirelessly to develop an approved remedy for affected vehicles," Volkswagen U.S. CEO Michael Horn said. “In the meantime, we are providing this goodwill package as a first step towards regaining our customers' trust."

Volkswagen vehicle owners interested in the offer must visit VWDieselInfo.com and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), name, address and mileage, after which they will receive their "goodwill package" in four weeks, reported USA Today.
