The Volkswagen Beetle that was built on January 18, 1979 in South Africa has been sent to Volkswagen museum.
The Beetle, which never hit the road, was the last of over 288,353 models built in Uitenhage in South Africa.
In the last 28 years of legacy, Volkswagen's Beetle had been the crowd pleaser and has created a historical brand. Beetle also has been the highest selling hatchback for the automaker. Even in the countryside of the United Sates, one can still get to see an old Beetle driven by senior citizens who still prefer to drive these vehicles than anything else.
The strong impact of the brand seemed to have motivated the Volkswagen to recreate its magic of 1979 again in 2012.
"It can be recalled that the last nine vehicles built in this genre were on their way to an exhibition in South Africa when their vehicle carrier lost control of the steering and met with a severe accident. All the vehicles were severely damaged and we were doubtful on the ninth one as we sent it to the manufacturing unit for recreation. Hopefully, if we manage to recreate it, it may receive a good applause from the crowd," said an official spokesperson of Volkswagen.
The shell of the last historical model was completely destroyed and it was only its hard metal used while building it had made the last South African Volkswagen Beetle to survive even in the toughest conditions.
"The condition was completely worst and we couldn't even recognize that it was the Beetle model from Volkswagen. But with our determination to recreate at any cost made us to sit and work on recreating it. We have repainted the old model with silver and we have fitted a new chassis for it. Hoping that the old beetle will hit the road again," added Volkswagen.
