Yokohama will roll out tires with wings at this year's Tokyo Motor Show as a way to improve fuel efficiency, Autoblog reported.

The Japanese tire manufacturer said in a press release that their engineers researched aerodynamics technology to figure out how to reduce vehicle air drag, which would lead to fuel efficiency.

By adding small fins at certain angles to the outer sidewall of the tire, Yokohama can control airflow over the tire and cut down on aerodynamic drag. As the engine decreases its effort to move the car, the car increases its fuel efficiency by cutting back on the amount of fuel needed to drive the car, according to CNET.

Yokohama teamed up with Tohoku University's Institute of Fluid Science to simulate on a supercomputer the effects small wings have on a tire when attached to the side wall, Mashable noted. The tire company is rather vague on exactly how significant the efficiency gains are.

For now, Yokohama is keeping the details of the aerodynamics tires close. The company hasn't said when the tires with fins will go into production or how big the fins are. Yokohama will debut a prototype of its innovation at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show on Oct. 28.
