Actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio plans on producing a film with Paramount Studios about the Volkswagen "clean diesel" scandal for Paramount, according to Variety Magazine.

The "dieselgate" scandal boils down to Volkswagen installing software in their engines that cheated fuel emissions tests. Basically, during daily driving conditions, the emission control software was off and the beloved V-Dub emitted nitrogen oxide levels beyond the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. Too much nitrogen oxide can cause smog and has been linked to asthma and lung diseases, Carbuzz reported.

Volkswagen is currently facing up to $18 billion in fines from the EPA, noted the Daily Mail.

Writer Jack Ewing is under contract to write a book on the car scandal. Paramount Studios already acquired the movie rights to Ewing's upcoming book, Carbuzz reported.

While DiCaprio - an environmentalist who invested in the eco-car company Fisker, according to Variety - will produce the film through his Appian Way production company. Whether he will star in it or not is not known at this time.
