Porsche has picked Apple CarPlay over Google's Android Auto as the operating system for its 2017 911 Carrera and Carrera S, saying that Android Auto collects "too much data," according to Motor Trend.
CarPlay allows drivers to safely use their phone while driving, according to Apple. The system's built-in display lets drivers make calls, get directions, listen to music, and send and receive messages while driving.
While Android Auto also provides a safe driving experience that integrates steering wheel controls and voice actions with an easy user interface, Google denies requesting "too much data" from Porsche, as Motor Trend stated.
Porsche apparently decided against the Android Auto system because Google wanted to collect information on vehicle speed, engine revs, throttle position, and coolant and oil temp, Motor Trended reported. Google wanted to transmit all of that information back to Mountain View, Calif. every time someone activated Android Auto.
Google released a statement explaining that some of the data that the system collects is for safety. Spokesman Markman did not disclose all of the data Android Auto collects.
"We're definitely open to working with other companies," a Porsche U.K. spokesperson told International Business Times on Tuesday. "The reason we went with Apple Car Play was because a majority of our owner use Apple devices, so it makes sense to focus on the manufacturer who would have the greatest impact."
The spokesperson, however, could not confirm or deny the accuracy of the comments given to Motor Trend.
The Motor Trend report has been updated since Google released their statement on Tuesday, stressing that Android Auto spokesperson Liz Markman declined to disclose everything that Google collects from its cars.
While the real reasons for Porsche choosing Apple CarPlay remain unclear, what is clear is that whether you have an iPhone or an Android, you can probably afford both if you're buying a Porsche 911 Carrera S.
