Tesla Motors has finally unveiled it's long-awaited Model X, the first fully electric luxury SUV.
The Model X, which debuted in front of an adoring audience of at least 1,000 people at Tesla's factory in Fremont, Calif., appears futuristic, fast and gorgeous, and its creators say that it even fights bioweapons.
"If there's ever an apocalyptical scenario, press the button," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, referring to the Biodefense Mode, reported MarketWatch. The crowd thought that the CEO was exaggerating, as he is known for hyperboles like "Ludicrous mode" for fast acceleration.
The Model X goes from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph, according to Tesla.
Musk also said that the Model X has trio air filters that clean the outside air to a level of cleanliness comparable to a hospital operating room, according to Business Insider.
"A medical grade HEPA filter strips outside air of pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution before circulating it into the cabin...Bioweapon defense mode creates positive pressure inside the cabin to protect occupants," Tesla said on its website.
"We are trying to be a leader in apocalyptic defense scenarios," Musk said jokingly.
The crowd went wild when Musk demonstrated how the falcon wings worked in a tight parking space, MarketWatch reported. He parked another maker's minivan on both sides of the Model X with little room for Musk to squeeze in. The doors smoothly moved up and out of the way. The two hinges can negotiate tight spaces without bumping their heads on the roof, and the door sensors can gauge ceiling heights.
In addition to having a gorgeous form, the Model X can fit up to seven adult passengers and features front and trunk room for golf bags, strollers or luggage, and panoramic windshield. Tesla's expanding Supercharger network provides free long-distance travel and an eight-year infinite mile battery and drive unit warranty, the company's website notes.
The electric motor has two electric motors and a 90 kWh battery pack. The safety first design has a floor-mounted battery that lowers the center of gravity to minimize the risk of rollover. The absence of a gasoline engine allows the large front trunk to act as an ample impact-absorbing crumple zone.
Those looking to get their own Model X can reserve them at TeslaMotors.com, and they will receive their vehicles in 2016. Reserve yours for $132,000, like venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson of Draper Fisher Jurvetson, who bought a white Model X, MarketWatch reported.
