Audi is set to take on Tesla Motor's upcoming Model X with its own electric SUV that will have a range of over 310 miles.

The unveiling for the German automaker's concept sport utility vehicle, called the e-tron quattro, is planned for September at this year's International Motor Show in Frankfurt, according to Financial Times. Audi plans to begin production for the car in 2018.

The car will be Audis' first mainstream electric vehicle and will compete with the Model X, which Tesla plans to release later this year.

Audi said that the e-tron quattro will come with a lithium-ion battery, and its SUV body will have a "flat, coupe-like cabin" with a spacious interior that can carry four people, CNBC reported.

Tesla said on its website that its SUV will combine "the space and functionality of a seven seat sport utility vehicle with the uncompromised performance of a Tesla." The vehicle's power will come from two independent and digitally controlled electric motors.

Audi's announcement follows days after Aston Martin revealed that it was stepping up in the electric car game with its own 800-horsepower electric sedan, as well as a DBX electric crossover vehicle.

Other automakers involved in the electric/hybrid vehicle push include Mercedes-Benz, which plans to launch 10 plug-in hybrids by 2017, and BMW, which already has the i3 all-electric compact and the i8 hybrid sports car, Financial Times reported.

"Hybridization, plug-in hybrids, or pure electric vehicles- this is a must for everyone," Audi chief executive Rupert Stadler said earlier this year. "And the company who is not able [to keep up]- not able by financial power, or not able by competence and technological power- they will disappear."
