2013 Scion FR-S – Affordable Sports Car at $24K

Scion announced Wednesday that its 2013 FR-S will start at $24,200, making it one of the most affordable sports cars in the U.S. market.

The fifth model of the Japanese brand is expected to go on sale in June. With an affordable price, the company hopes to attract young buyers.

“Scion’s goal was to create an affordable sports car that true driving enthusiasts could enjoy,” said Jack Hollis, Vice President of Scion, in the Wednesday’s statement.

“We accomplished that with a starting price under $25,000, which is a total home run for buyers! Add in Scion’s complimentary Scion Service Boost, our dealers’ no-haggle no-hassle Pure Price, and Scion’s network of about 1,000 dealers, and the FR-S is a grand slam.”

Hollis also hopes for FR-S to bring a new dimension in Scion’s collections.

“The FR-S will definitely be Scion’s halo car,” said Jack Hollis. “While the brand has been iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the new iQ, the addition of the FR-S expands the brand into a new dimension of driving performance.

The FR-S stands for Front-engine, Real-wheel drive, and Sport. It will be equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Together with the D-4S injection system, the vehicle can produce 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. The company estimates an EPA rating of 34 miles-per-gallon on highway.

While the car may be affordable, some have reported that no turbo option would be a disappointment.

According to Motor Authority, a turbocharged Scion FR-S would be around $30,000 and defeats the purpose of making an affordable sports car.
