For anyone who has played the popular video game "Grand Theft Auto," reckless driving is a familiar scene to you. Many people would not even think about trying any of those stunts in real life, but on Saturday in Palm Beach, Fla., live stream cameras captured a man driving his SUV through the bridge arm and soaring over the Flagler Bridge.
Identified as 29-year-old James Montano, he was driving toward West Palm Beach when the arms guarding the draw bridge lowered, according to local NBC affiliate WITN. Police say this was not a driver trying to reenact an Evil Knievel stunt, but rather was a result of not paying attention.
"It was a distracted driver incident and the individual was coming back towards west palm and didn't see the bridge arms coming down, it was suspected the guy was messing with his GPS," said Officer Philip Salm of the Palm Beach Police Department.
Timing is key, and in Montano's case, life-saving.
"Stay focused. You have a 2,000-pound vehicle you're in charge of. The implications of what could have happened, had he hit at a different time or he hit the ramp and went over the side. You're talking about a potentially fatal accident," Salm said.
The bridge was closed for around five hours after the incident in order to repair the bridge arm, according to the Palm Beach Post. Montano and his passenger were treated for minor injuries on the scene, CBS affiliate WKBN reports.
