Safety regulators for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have opened an investigation into Mazda CX-9 SUVs manufactured for the 2007 to 2008 model years.

NHTSA decided to open a probe after receiving multiple complaints from consumers that front suspension lower ball joints could separate, causing drivers to lose control of their vehicle, according to the Associated Press.

No accidents, injuries or fatalities have been linked to the issue yet.

"The reports appear to show an increasing trend," NHTSA said in a probe summary regarding the investigation. "One of the separations allegedly occurred at 40 mph and the other five incidents occurred at speeds between 0 and 20 mph."

Four of the six complaints received so far came from states that use salt in order to clear roads during the winter.

So far, Mazda owners don't need to worry, as NHTSA has just opened a preliminary evaluation. This often results in a recall, however, so owners should keep track of the investigation.
