For years, there have been rumors that a new Ferrari Dino would reach production and now we have some definitive proof from the head of Ferrari himself.

"It's not a matter of if, but when," Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne said this week to Autocar.

Marchionne, who also runs FCA, added that the automaker wouldn't use "Dino" as a sub-brand name, nor would it be featured on any ride just to increase sales.

The Dino will, however, feature at least 500 horsepower.

"We may produce a 500 horsepower Ferrari but it will not be a cheap Ferrari," said Marchionne to Autocar. "The brand is unique and needs to be protected. I would always rather build 500 fewer cars than the market demands rather than 500 more."

"We must not mess with customer expectations of Ferrari as an exclusive brand," the CEO added.

The new Dino won't be released until 2018 at the earliest so there are still a lot of things Ferrari needs to figure out still, like a base price, engine options and where it will sit in the Ferrari line.

Will Ferrari sell the Dino with an eco-friendly V6? Will wealthy car owners have to pay more than $400,000 for one? All important questions we'll be anxiously waiting to find out.
