The Issue:

BMW has launched a new Takata recall that includes select BMW 325i, 325xi, 330i and 330xi sedans manufactured between 2002 and 2006.

Affected BMWs contain faulty Takata air bags that can explode upon deployment, sending metal shrapnel at occupants inside the vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

List of Cars:

The official list of vehicles affected by this recall includes: the 2002-2005 BMW 325i, 325xi, 325i, 330i and 330xi wagons, 2002-2006 BMW 330Ci, 325Ci and M3 convertibles and 325i, 330i and M3 coupes, 2002-2003 BMW M5, 540i, 525i sedan and 530i sedans and 540i and 525i sport wagons and 2003-2004 BMW X5 3.0i and 4.4i SUVs.

The Fix:

Dealers are being told replace the front driver air bag module in all affected vehicles, free of charge to customers.

Injuries or Accidents:

The company said in a statement that it is unaware of any injuries or accidents linked to the latest issue.

Recall Date:

An official recall date has not been announced. Owners should use NHTSA's VIN Lookup Tool to find more information until then.  

Number of Models Affected:

The new recall adds 279,965 vehicles to BMW's Takata air bag recall. The overall total is now up to 420,661 vehicles in the U.S.
