Daimler and Qualcomm to Provide Wireless Charging, Connected Car Technologies

Daimler announced this weekend that it has reached an agreement with Qualcomm to provide wireless recharging for electric vehicles.

The deal between the Mercedes-Benz parent company and the mobile technologies firm also means they will explore wireless recharging of tablets and smartphones in vehicles, according to Reuters.

"Our work with Daimler AG is a natural extension of the sponsorship we have with the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team as our work in motorsports cultivates the innovation and advancements seen in the auto space," said Derek Aberle, president of Qualcomm Incorporated, according to a joint release.

The team will also explore new ways to improve the in-vehicle experience through faster connectivity.

Daimler has been looking for creative ways to get ahead of rival automakers like Audi and BMW and the new deal with Qualcomm could be a step in that direction.

"The automobile has become an extension of always-on connectivity, and as such, we're continuously utilizing our expertise in wireless mobility to deliver in-car experiences comparable to the ease and convenience of smartphones," Aberle added.

Neither company has provided specific details of products yet nor when they could start appearing in vehicles, but it's exciting all the same.  Imagine, eventually we'll have self-driving cars that feature wireless smartphone charging. We basically won't have to lift a finger anymore.
