China will support the building electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the country, hoping to have 5 million green cars to appear on the roads of China by 2020.

On Wednesday, the Chinese government made a statement on its website that it plans to sell a total of 0.5 million electric vehicles by 2015 and a total of five million units by the end of 2020. The statement also set the goal to lower the average fuel consumption of passenger cars produced in 2015 to 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers and to 5 liters per 100 kilometers in 2020.

"We welcome the plan and the following encouragement policies, as our company has involved more than 200 engineers into the research and development of parts related to electric vehicles," said Chen Yudong, president of Bosch (China) Investment.

Beijing has been promoting electric car industry with subsidies. The government had also promised to bring a total of $15.87 billion investment by 2020.

Last year, China sold about 8,160 alternative energy cars - about 5,580 electric cars and 2,580 hybrid cars - according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Alternative energy cars sales were not high yet due to expensive battery costs and lack of charging facilities.

According to the statement, the government will strengthen infrastructure of green cars by building more battery-charging stations and make more facilities for recycling batteries.

Since 2009, China became the world’s largest auto market, marking sale record of 13.64 million vehicle sold that year.
