General Motors to Invest $1 Billion in Warren Technical Center Expansion

Last month, GM announced plans to invest $139.5 million for a new body shop and stamping facility at its Warren Pre-Production Operations. That's nothing compared to the news the Detroit company dished out on Thursday.

GM has decided to invest a whopping $1 billion in its Warren Technical Center campus in Michigan that should help add 2,600 new jobs to the current 19,000 employees at the technical center.

The investment will result in a new IT building, testing facilities at the Advanced Energy Center, more parking and a brand new design studio, according to GM.

"This is an investment in our people who work at the Tech Center because it is positioning the company for long-term growth by enabling new levels of innovation and collaboration into our workplace," said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development and Purchasing and Supply Chain in a company statement.

The center, which opened in 1956, is located north of Detroit, features 38 different buildings and 174 acres of parking.

GM believes the expansion should be completed sometime around 2018.

"I am very excited about the investment in the GM Tech Center in Warren, which means more jobs and new revenue for police and fire services," said Warren Mayor Jim Fouts.

GM said earlier this year it has about $9 billion set aside for global capital spending in 2015, which is an increase from the $7 billion the Detroit automaker set aside in 2014. The money set aside for this year will go towards new vehicle launches and to invest in new technology.
