Audi made an official confirmation that the awaited Q5 Hybrid will finally come to the United States in 2013.

The compact crossover will be Audi’s first hybrid which will be available for purchase across North America.

The automaker has been experimenting with hybrids from 1989. It was during this year when it showed off the first of three gas-electric concepts. But in the recent times, the carmakers had to meet with several false starts when it come to bringing a hybrid models to the United States. Back in 2008, it was planned that the hybrid Q5 would be launched alongside of the standard model for 2009. The plan, however, was quashed due to falling fuel prices and Audi’s dissatisfaction with nickel-metal hydride battery packs.

The Q5 Hybrid will come with the same 211-horsepower, 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that are found in the current base model Q5. In addition, the hybrid model will have a 54-horsepower electric motor and powered by 1.3kwh lithium ion battery pack. The car can accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. Overall combined, the engine motor output up to 245 horsepower and 354 pounds-feet torque. By using its parallel hybrid system, the Q5 Hybrid can also be operated in electric or gas mode and can be accelerate up to 62 mph by using its motor alone.
