The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) is planning to build its all new cult sports car DMC-12 from next year.

Although the automaker was bankrupt in 1982, the DMC-12 received fame by appearing in the "Back to the Future" trilogy as a vehicle that travels between time. Now, the sports car with gull-wings are coming back to the market - but this time with a battery instead of a fuel tank.

The new upgraded model has been put on display at the New York International Auto Show. The rear side of the new DMC-12 will be fore the storage of power. The engine is replaced by a 32-kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery pack, which is capable of pushing the car to a top speed of 125 miles per hour and at a driving range of 100 miles.

The company has partnered with Chris Anthony, the leader behind the Flux batteries and the now-defunct Aptera project.

"The original car had a 68/32 weight bias but it was front-heavy. Whereas on the electric one we have 55/45, and it feels much more balanced,” said Wynne, salesman for the DMC-12, to Forbes in an interview.
