Ford Recalls 140,000 Focus Cars

Ford Motors is recalling more than 140,000 Focus models, due to reported errors in passenger side windshield wiper.

According to the report posted on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Detroit-based automaker is recalling certain 2012 Ford Focus vehicles. The missing seal in the wiring harness connector may cause water to accumulate in the connector, resulting in an "intermittent or inoperative" side wiper.

The report stated that Ford begin notifying the owners on or about May 21 and fix the for free.

"Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and as necessary, clean and properly seal the passenger side wiper motor connector. Any inoperative wiper motors will be replaced. This service will be provided free of charge," said the report.

The affected models are produced between Aug. 1, 2010 and Oct. 18, 2011. A Ford spokesman Daniel Pierce told the NYTimes that the 2012 models built after Oct. 18 will not be recalled. Pierce added that the the problem was discovered at the plant. Ford said no accidents have been reported at the moment. NHTSA reported that the potential number of affected units is 140,310.

A rental car company Avis Budget Group Inc. said on Friday that about 10,000 Ford Focus cars will be removed from the company's rental fleet, due to the recall announcement.

In the mean time, owners of affected vehicles may contact the Ford Motor Company Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
