Shelby Unveils "World's Most Powerful Muscle Car"

Shelby American Inc. unveiled the world’s most powerful series of muscle cars, Shelby 1000, on at the New York International Auto Show.

The dream car of its founder Carroll Shelby received enhancement in power, braking, and handling to create a "hyper-performance muscle car available in both street and competition".

"Carroll modeled the Shelby 1000 on the same philosophy as he did in the '60s, using a balance of horsepower and handling," said the president of Shelby American John Luft in the announcement.

"Once again, Shelby American is making history and rewriting the rules for performance," added Luft.

According to the company, the Shelby 1000 can produce around 950 horsepower and the "off-road" Shelby 1000 S/C can reach over 1,100 horsepower.

Gil Navarrez, the company's Speed Shop director, explained that the result came not by simply turning up the boost but by taking "the serious hot rod approach".

"We took the serious hot rod approach by taking Ford's 5.4 liter engine down to the block, and beefed up the internals by machining it for new rods, crank and pistons. We also flowed the heads, revamped the cooling and improved the exhaust. With a choice of a Kenne- Bell 3.6 liter or the new Whipple 4.0 liter supercharger and tune, it will crank out serious power all day long," said Navarrez.

Shelby added that the company collaborated with engineering partners Ford Racing, Borla, Tremec, and Kenne Bell to create "the ultimate, handcrafted muscle car".

"It's the most powerful Shelby based on a Ford Mustang that has ever been built at Shelby American," exclaimed Gary Patterson, vice president of operations.

The Shelby American is currently taking orders for the Shelby 1000, with the starting price of $149,995.
