Imagine a world where you hail a taxi from your phone that doesn't have a driver. Seems a little crazy right? Well that might be exactly what Uber is working on at its newly created Advanced Technologies Center in Pittsburgh.

The center, created just two months ago in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University, was built as an experimental lab where some of the top minds in the world could create technology in mapping, autonomous driving and vehicle safety, according to a company blog post.

Now it seems the San Francisco-based company is looking to fill nineteen positions at the facility to accomplish just that.

"As an Uber ATC team member, you'll have a direct impact on the innovation of cutting edge technologies," Uber said in its job postings. "The work you will do will be tested and deployed on real systems, in real-world conditions. The experience you will gain will be unique and unmatched."

Positions listed on April 6 range from an Automotive Safety Engineer with experience in "developing safety critical software or hardware systems" and "safety testing and certification" to a Machine Learning Specialist with knowledge of "anomaly detection" and "Bayesian optimization."

Uber is also looking for a Master Technician, a Traffic Simulation Engineer and a Motion Planning Engineer, among others that seemingly indicate Uber is looking to develop autonomous driving systems.

The news is pretty exciting for fans of Uber's services, despite the fact that the posts don't indicate if Uber wants to get into the driverless car business or just add the technology to other company's cars.

Uber would face stiff competition from automakers like BMW, Nissan and Daimler along with tech giants like Google who have all started testing autonomous vehicles already.

Either way it will be nice to see Uber make headlines for its contributions for a change instead of causing trouble.
